There was a time, way back in the old days, when folks had to figure out their own building plans for /sheds. Today, the Internet has many resources, some free where you can find storage building plans and build your own shed/barn with your own hands. There is a certain pride and sense of accomplishment in doing these things yourself.

Reasons to build your own storage building using storage building plans:

  • Cheaper – You can find cheap materials at local lumber yards or at home improvement stores. Your storage building plans should include a list of the materials you need for this project.
  • Control – When you use storage building plans you have complete control over your project.
  • Brainstorming – You will probably come up with new ideas while mulling over storage building plans that will personalize your storage building.

The planning phase:

  • Figure out your budget before you begin your project.
  • Measure the area you plan to place your storage building so you know what size you want. Also call your local utility company to make sure you know where the water lines are before you start digging.
  • Get storage building plans online in the size you need.
  • Decide on a foundation. Typically, you will choose from a concrete pad or a skid pad. There is also the more advanced foundation call the concrete pier foundation which is needed for certain kinds of storage buildings. Much of this information will be very detailed in storage building plans.
  • Mark the four corners where the storage building will be constructed with short wooden stakes making sure to measure and keep it square.
  • Now you need to put up batter boards that you will attach string lines where the walls will be. See your storage building plans for an illustration of how this should look.
  • Once you have excavated the area for your storage building, you will prepare your concrete. You will also prepare the excavated area by placing wooden boards around the edges before pouring the concrete. When you pour the concrete, keep it level. Anchor bolts with be placed as per your plans.
  • Next you will lay your storage building floor as per instructions from your storage building plans.
  • Now wall framing will begin and you simply follow the instructions from your specific plans to get the framing done. Roof framing will follow wall framing.
  • Next you will prepare and install the windows and door(s).
  • Finally, you will install your siding making sure you have measured and properly cut to allow for the windows and doors on your storage building.

That is how you build a storage building with your own two hands and the sweat of your brow. Remember to get the right storage building plans and follow the instructions so you get it right the first time. Don’t rush this project as allowing the concrete to harden completely will take 1 or 2 days. Take your time and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
